MOUNTAIN SAFETY

RUNNING IN THE MOUNTAINS REQUIRES PREPARATION

The Mountain Is Powerful. Safety Makes The Race Possible.

DHARAK races take place in real mountain terrain. Safety is built through preparation, responsible runners, trained teams and clear mountain protocols.

Safety Philosophy

Mountain racing takes place in environments where weather, terrain and altitude can change quickly. While DHARAK designs races with strong safety systems, running in the mountains always involves inherent risk.

Our responsibility as organizers is to plan carefully, deploy trained teams, and create systems that protect runners while respecting the mountain environment.

Safety is a shared responsibility between the race team and every participant on the course.

Runner Responsibility

Trail running in mountain terrain requires physical preparation, awareness and responsible decision making.

  • Run within your physical limits
  • Follow course markings carefully
  • Carry mandatory safety gear
  • Respect instructions from volunteers
  • Be aware of changing mountain weather

If a runner encounters an injured participant, the expectation is to stop and assist or inform the nearest course marshal.

  • Report emergencies immediately
  • Do not abandon fellow runners
  • Use emergency contact numbers if needed

Mountain races succeed because runners support each other.

Mandatory Gear

Depending on terrain and weather conditions, runners may be required to carry specific safety equipment.

The final mandatory gear list will be specified in the official race guide for each DHARAK chapter.

Course Safety Systems

Course Marshals

Trained volunteers are positioned along the course to guide runners and monitor key sections of terrain.

  • Route monitoring
  • Runner assistance
  • Emergency communication

Medical Support

Medical teams and first responders are positioned at important points along the course and at the finish area.

  • First aid treatment
  • Injury stabilization
  • Evacuation coordination

Aid Stations

Aid stations provide hydration and support at strategic points along the race route.

  • Water and hydration
  • Basic nutrition
  • Runner monitoring

Course Marking

Courses are clearly marked using DHARAK flags, directional markers and signage at important junctions.

  • Trail flags
  • Directional signs
  • Critical junction marking

Runner Tracking

Race officials maintain start and finish records along with checkpoint monitoring to track participants on the course.

  • Start list verification
  • Checkpoint monitoring
  • Finish confirmation

Sweep Team

Sweep runners move behind the final participants to ensure the course remains clear and no runner is left unattended.

  • Final course sweep
  • Assistance for exhausted runners
  • Safety verification

Weather Conditions

Mountain weather can change rapidly. Race organizers may delay, shorten, reroute or cancel races if conditions become unsafe.

Participant safety always takes priority over race completion.

If You Lose The Trail

Although courses are clearly marked, runners may occasionally lose the trail in mountain terrain.

Do not continue moving into unknown terrain.

Respect The Mountain

Running in the mountains is a privilege. Responsible behavior protects both runners and the landscapes where these races take place.

Respect for the mountain allows these races to exist.

Prepare For The Mountain

Understanding mountain terrain and safety systems is an important part of every DHARAK race experience.
