The Terrain Systems of DHARAK

Every DHARAK race is built around natural Himalayan terrain systems. Runners do not run on modified racecourses — they move through the landscapes that define the mountains.

Forest Trails

Ancient footpaths running through oak, rhododendron and pine forests. These trails form the lower approach routes into the mountains.

  • Technical single track
  • Rolling terrain and gradual climbs
  • Common in Dehradun Trails and lower Himalayan races

Ridge Running

Mountain ridges — or Dhar — define the identity of DHARAK. These exposed routes offer expansive views and demanding elevation changes.

  • Sustained climbs and descents
  • Wind exposed terrain
  • Signature terrain of DHARAK races

Alpine Bugyals

High altitude Himalayan meadows known as bugyals create vast open running landscapes above the treeline.

  • Undulating alpine terrain
  • High altitude exposure
  • Found in Nanda Sacred Trails routes

High Altitude Terrain

Above 3000 meters the mountains become more demanding. Air becomes thinner and weather conditions can change rapidly.

  • Reduced oxygen levels
  • Cold temperatures and wind
  • Requires endurance and preparation

DHARAK Mountain Systems

Each DHARAK chapter emerges from a distinct Himalayan landscape. Explore the mountain systems where the trails begin.

The DHARAK Race Series

DHARAK is a mountain terrain race series inspired by the ridges (Dhar) of the Himalayas. Each event is built around the natural landscape of its region, offering runners an authentic terrain experience rather than a modified racecourse.
